Tuesday 1st September: Writers’ Workshop for Beginners with novelist Venetia Welby (10.30am-4pm)
Do you have a story to tell? A book inside you, perhaps?
If you’re hesitating over how to start, then here’s the perfect launchpad for you. As The Bothy at Bowood’s series of expert-led workshops picks up again, novelist Venetia Welby’s ‘Writers’ Workshop’ is specifically designed with beginners in mind.
Following her Guest Speaker appearance at Bowood Hotel’s Ladies’ Lunch in early March, Mother of Darkness author Venetia will return to Bowood to teach a small, relaxed group of first-timers. An international tutor for over fifteen years, Venetia will guide you through this inspiring workshop, crafted especially to excite your imagination and encourage new ideas. Warming up with an exercise to free the hand and mind, you will spend the morning exploring the development of authentic characters, the vital heart of any compelling book.
After lunch, you will use your senses to bring the setting of a story to life. Bowood’s captivating parkland will serve as muse with its expansive vistas and ever-present sense of history also there to prompt words onto the page. Twenty minutes of the itinerary will be devoted to observational meandering through ‘Capability’ Brown’s Pleasure Grounds as part of a writing task.
The former gardener’s bothy has been rejuvenated as a dedicated space for talks, readership events and presentations and so will lend itself well to the Writing Workshop’s agenda and stimulating exchange with Venetia at the helm.
